A motor insurance policy is a mandatory policy issued by an insurance company as part of prevention of public liability to protect the general public from any accident that might take place on the road. The law mandates that every owner of a motor vehicle must have at least a third party insurance policy.
Types of Motor Insurance Policy:

This is the minimum insurance that owners of motor vehicles plying Nigerian roads are required to have under the third party Act of 1945. The policy covers liability for death or bodily injury to a third party arising from the use of the vehicle. Section 68 of the Insurance Act 2003 extends the liability to cover damage to the property of a third party to the tune of One Million Naira. It also makes it a criminal offence not to have a motor vehicle third party insurance policy and the penalty for non-compliance is imprisonment for one year or a fine of N250, 000 or both.
- THIRD PARTY, FIRE AND THEFT
Third Party, Fire & Theft Vehicle Insurance covers your vehicle for accidental damage caused to a third party and against theft and fire damage caused to your vehicle, however any damages caused to your vehicle will not be covered.
Comprehensive Cover is the highest level of cover a person can have if they take out motor insurance. While Third-party only and third-party, fire and theft policies cover damage to others as the result of an accident that was deemed your fault, any damage to your own car is your own problem, Comprehensive car insurance policies, on the other hand, covers for damage to your car as well.
A fire insurance contact may be defined as ‘an agreement’ whereby one party in return for a consideration undertakes to indemnify the other party against financial loss which the latter may sustain by reason of certain subject-matter being damaged or destroyed by fire or other defined perils up to an agreed amount.

CASH IN TRANSIT
It covers loss of money in all forms E.g. cash, cheques, postal and money orders belonging to the Insured whilst in transit from the insured’s premises to the Bank and vice-versa, Loss of money occasioned by robbery or theft or any cause whilst in transit or in premises.
GROUP LIFE ASSURANCE
Group Life Assurance is a policy that covers the death of an employee while in service. Employers with three (3) or more staff are expected to take this cover mandatorily. On the death of an employee, a benefit equivalent to three (3) times of the annual emolument of the employee is paid to his/her next-of-kin.

Fidelity Guarantee insurance is an insurance policy designed to indemnify the Insured (the employer) for the loss of money or property sustained as a direct result of acts of fraud, theft or dishonesty by an employee in the course of employment.
GOODS IN TRANSIT
This covers the goods of the insured against fire, theft or accidental damage while the goods are being loaded or unloaded, as well as, while the goods are in transit or whilst temporarily housed within the general course of transit. It’s highly important to protect your goods from these unavoidable incidents.
The Cover commences immediately the goods are being loaded on to the transit vehicle and lasts until the goods are unloaded at the final destination. The conveyance can be either by road or by rail or by air or by water, and the geographical limit is anywhere in Nigeria.
Personal Accident Insurance provides compensation to individuals or groups (Clubs, Families or Companies) in the event of accidental bodily injury to the insured person (s) which results to death, disablement or hospitalization.
